knittery: amazing circular stuffSubmitted by mivox on 21 November, 2005 - 5:12pm.
So, I learned to knit recently. I'm pretty thrilled, really. First I knit a great big long scarf. After two skeins of yarn, I was pretty sure I had the basic stockinette stich down pat. So I knit another scarf with a wavy pattern this time... and then I decided to bust out my new circular needles, and knit a moebius loop. I am a geek, and the idea of knitting a moebius loop made me happy... Gloating over my finished moebius loop neck cozy made me even happier. ![]() And then I knitted a Magic Scarf... which means I knit a tube (circular needles again), and then pulled out half the stitches when I was done. Which sounds masochistic, but makes the most amazingly cozy neck cowl you can imagine. And it's such pretty colors! ![]() "Knitting?!" you say, "Knitting does not sound like 'you', dear mivox. It does not sound like you at all." Which may be true, depending on what I sound like to you... but it's really an excellent thing to do for someone who thinks too much. It absorbs just enough of your attention to crowd out the really stupid, self-defeating busy-thinking, and leaves just enough left over for thinking about important things or having a conversation. And when you're done, you have nice, fuzzy things to show for it. And you can give them to people, and make them happy, or you can keep them to snuggle with yourself. And your hands are busy, so there's only so much you can drink while you're knitting (just enough to get warm and fuzzy, but not so much to get stupid--unless you're doing shots, perhaps--or maybe I'm not doing it right?). So now I want to find people to talk to while I knit. I've been reading the hell out of Crazy Aunt Purl's blog for the past few days, and besides falling hopelessly in long-distance-crush-girly-love with her, I'm totally jealous that she has a knitting group. Not jealous enough to move to a big city to join one... but jealous enough to actually look for a knitting group around here, and perhaps get my hermit-self out of the house an extra night of the week. I also really need to find a cheaper way of getting yarn. I won't even say how much my all-handspun-and/or-hand-dyed-merino-wool moebius shawl cost. *sigh* (If'n you're interested, you can see photos of the things I make in my "I Made It!" photoset on Flickr. It's not all knitting... but I think a lot of it will be, as time goes on.) del.icio.us.orati stuff: mivox, knitting, moebius, circularneedles, crazyauntpurl, knittery, hobby |
