fairbanks gets some culture!

A truly wondrous thing has happened in Fairbanks. A lovely woman named Tatiana has taken it upon herself (with the support of the Fairbanks Arts Association) to offer a weekly film series at a community center theater. A truly welcome addition to the campaign to Get Teresa Out of The House More.

Last night, I enjoyed Godard's Contempt, and next week will be a feature of Northwest filmmakers' work. I'm particularly looking forward to next month's collection of shorts from Russian animators... and all for $3, it seems.

Last night was the first film offered, apparently. When it started, only 4 of us were in the theater. I think 4 or 5 people came in after it started. I'm really hoping word spreads, and enough people attend to keep the series going through the winter. I know my Thursday evenings are officially booked.

If you happen to live in Fairbanks, 1. Leave a comment so I know I've got a local reader! and 2. Pencil in the Thursday evening films at the Pioneer Park community center theater.

I'm googling Fairbanks a bit because I'm applying for a campus job. Your November post made me very happy indeed. Even knowing there were a dozen or so film buffs in attendance that first evening says something good (and important) about what I might expect to find. Thanks! Dr. John

...there are not only the Thursday movies (which I admit I've been missing lately), but a theater outside town that shows some eclectic second-run stuff too. And a surprising amount of theater activity, and summer festivals and whatnot.

Being the second biggest city in Alaska may not seem like much by the numbers, but it does kinda make us the cultural epicenter of the northern half of the state at least. ;-)
